Aladdin was a massive hit thanks to good performances from the whole ensemble as well as solid singing and impressive set designs. Everything seemed very nice: from colorful costumes to weird dance numbers, the movie definitely worked for millions of moviegoers. The $1 billion box office haul meant that the studio was more than ready to greenlight a sequel.
As of right now, the next installment in the franchise is already in pre production. The movie starring Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith playing the role of a lively Genie was a remake of the first animated movie released in 1992. Note that the animated film had a sequel of its own meaning that The Return of Jafar is something we can expect from the next picture. However, there are some things that make us question what will come in Aladdin II.
More Will Smith?
One of the biggest questions is whether we will see Genie again. In the epilog of the first movie, we see him sailing away with his family on a boat. The animated version of Genie went to explore the world at the end of the first animated movie. However, he promptly returned in the second film after traveling all around the world using his magical powers leftovers.
There are several possible issues with the return of the wish-granter. First of all, he is not a magician anymore since Aladdin said that he wants Genie to be a human. Second, Will Smith is starring in Bad Boys for Life which was also a huge financial success. It is more than possible that there will be scheduling conflicts and it is hard to tell which movie is a bigger priority for Mr. Smith. Although, we would love to see him back in the world of Arabian nights.
The Return of Jafar was less of a musical and you won’t even remember any standout songs from the sequel. The first movie is iconic and there are multiple songs that were very memorable and made an impact on the music industry. To be honest, the new song performed by Naomi Scott was far from catchy and memorable musical numbers worthy of praise. While it was by no means a bad song, there was nothing particularly interesting about it.
The question is do we even need music in the sequel to Aladdin? Well, it is hard to tell if you can easily sell a remake of a Disney classic without having some cool songs. Additionally, we haven’t heard about any composers attached to the project. More importantly, we haven’t heard about any song writers attached to it.
Guy Ritchie’s return is possible
Guy Ritchie had a rocky career. After making a bunch of really good movies about two decades ago, he created a series of poorly received ones aside from Sherlock Holmes movies that were quite successful. However, Ritchie is attached to multiple projects. Will he reject an offer to direct a sequel to his best-earning movie ever? It is more than likely that he will be back if the studio wants him.
What about other cast members
While the main attention was focused on Aladdin himself and Jasmin as well as Genie, there are many other characters that were at least memorable including the handmaid of the princess Dala. We would also love to see Jaffar again in a slightly more menacing form since his image in the first movie was not as convincing as some fans would like it to be. For many cast members, Aladdin was the biggest highlight in their careers. They will most certainly prioritize it over any other offer!
