Brena Cogle visited her home-town Drive-In theater as a child about 30 years ago, that was great part of her childhood. Now she is back for this tradition. She is sitting near her car for her kids and relative, to watch film from Disney. Actually that happened because of coronavirus pandemic, she understood that she can’t go any usual places with her family, so she chosen drive through theater. As she says, they spend a couple of days in their house, working and studying online, that had great effect on their family, she really wants to do something to chill out, sitting with whole family for weeks — is really stressful.
Theaters with drive in and theaters near the nature experiencing huge amount of viewers and consumers, because government close most of traditional ways of rest, such as theaters, cinemas, parks, restaurants, shops, malls and all other places, where you can get fun. All to make social distancing during coronavirus pandemic.
Directors and owners of these drive-ins theaters reports that their profits highly increased, but they are ready for influx of visitors, also most of them reports, that they control social distancing in their theaters, and they can reduce amount of viewers, if government want to do so.
Businessman which owns with his family one of Drive-ins, reports that his profit made 200% in selling tickets, every session of film all tickets are sold out. Always working two screens, in total they accommodate around 140 cars and more than 300 tickets. He believes, that after end of coronavirus pandemic situation, their business will continue growing, people remembered their childhood activities and probably will continue this tradition.
All of these theaters became a rescue for families, which stacked in their small houses or apartments. This opportunity really helps to survive this coronavirus outbreak, with minimum nerve loss.
Anyway some owners were forced to close their theaters, because of hard situation in their regions, as government want to decrease human contacts as much as possible, so they decided to close everything possible, same as China did. Coronavirus has bad effect on elderly people. Some politics decided to close all events which consists more than 10 people, drive-ins is highly more than 10 people, so they started to closing in some towns and states. As they say — this is not personal attack, we will close everything to stop spreading coronavirus, this is the best way to beat it, believe us. That happened also, because some people did not stay full film inside their cars and directors of theaters just can’t control that properly.
Owners of small drive-ins, and which ones situated in low risk zones, anyway try to prevent human contact between visitors or at least minimize this experience.
Now directors decided to make new rule, you are not allowed to leave your car, if you did that you should leave theater. As another action of protection, now they check that everyone have masks and gloves.
Now a lot of visitors say — these theaters helped our families a lot, we do not break any rules, we sit in cars, use gloves, use masks and still it’s anyway better to just sit at home, we are happy we have chance to have fun at least like that.
This is really great moment for the drive-ins, because every year their profits fall, amount of visitors fall and popularity at all fall too. The peak of this type of theaters was in 1959. State with most theaters like that is California, which has 50 theaters, New York and Pennsylvania have 46.
Will you go in drive-in theater with your family?
