Del Toro’s career is a story of fame and glory. He was on a short hiatus after producing an-oscar-winning picture The Shape of Water. Now, he decided to slightly expand his horizons by directing a stop-motion version of the Pinocchio story which is an interesting artistic shift in his career. While we do not know who will be featured in the movies exactly, there are several interesting rumors and leaks suggesting that the movie will have a long list of A-listers in the cast.
Pinocchio’s father-figure Geppetto is voiced by David Bradley who is most known for his amazing work in the Games of Thrones TV show portraying Walder Frey and in Harry Potter where he played the role of Argus Filch. The actor shared some interesting revelations with the press recently.
He said that the ensemble assembled for the movie is stacked to the point where you cannot fit in more stars with big names. Mr. Bradley will work in the same recording studio with Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange and Okja), and Ewan McGregor (Dr. Sleep and Star Wars).
Obviously, having a cast full of talented individuals with impressive acting portfolios is not something alien to Del Toro. He worked on massive blockbusters like Hellboy, Pacific Rim, and Blade II starring some great actors. Including Ron Perlman in his cast is more akin to a tradition now for Del Toro.
Other names are a little bit more intriguing. Christoph Waltz is an actor with two Oscar statuettes on his shelf after working on two movies with Quentin Tarantino. Mr. Waltz appeared in multiple big franchises and movies including the recent fan-favorite Alita: Battle Angel. Tilda Swinton had been busy elevating movies like Okja, Snowpiercer, and Doctor Strange. Fans of Star Wars believe that Ewan McGregor is like a demiurge figure after portraying iconic Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The upcoming Pinocchio movie is a weird take on the story with the main character living in Italy during the pre-World-War-II era under Mussolini. The movie will not cater to children and will be likely rated R. The cast full of amazing character actors will fit the darker story. Both Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton are known for their ability to bring a little bit of insanity to characters they are playing. Let’s hope that the next work of Del Toro will be Oscar-worthy!
