If you’re die hard fan of the Justice League comics or the whole DCEU in general, you’re going to be thrilled with the latest news that the Justice League Dark members may be getting some silver screen love in the near future.
What is Justice League Dark?
If you’re not hardcore enough to know who the Justice League Dark is and haven’t already Googled it, the Dark is a specialized unit of superheroes in the Justice League alliance that deal with the magical, mythological, and just plain weird situations that confront the League.
So, if some witch is trying to resurrect an army of the dead? This kind of falls outside the wheelhouse of Batman, Aquaman, and even Superman. Instead, we get a squad of heroes who specialize in the supernatural.
Ever since the release of the 2017 animated feature of Dark, fans have been waiting for an upcoming live-action version (and perhaps its own unique franchise). Unfortunately, the development of the film has been less than desirable considering it began BEFORE the release of the animated film and it has been shelved for several years now.
Enter JJ Abrams, love him or hate him, the guy gets projects done. In 2019, he entered a 5 year contract with WarnerMedia and he intends to develop film and TV projects that will include members or Justice League Dark.
It should be interesting to see how the project progresses and what might be teased to us along the way. One of the main villains from the Dark line in DC has already been featured on screen – Enchantress.
Yes, the main baddie from Suicide Squad is actually the main antagonist in the infancy of the Justice League Dark, but this isn’t the only crossover possibility as the current leader of Justice League Dark in the comics is none other than Wonder Woman.
Justice League Dark Past and Present
The original members of Dark were all brought together by Madame Xanadu. A princess and sister to King Arthur and trained by Merlin, Xanadu brings a group of heroes together to combat the rise of Enchantress. This started in the comics back in 2011 and is the brainchild of Peter Miligan and Mikel Janin.
The original team members have come and gone over time and have included quite an array of magical and supernatural heroes including Zatanna Zatara who has an intermittent love interest with John Constantine who you might recall was playing by Keanu Reeves some time ago.
Other interesting original members include Deadman who is trapped in between life and death permanently to atone for his bad deeds before his death and Rac Shade, a poet that fights evil as Shade the Changing Man.
The members of the group have continued to change over the last few years and only Zatanna remains as an original member, but the group still has quite a bit of intriguing and diverse characters including a cigar smoking detective Chimpanzee aptly named Detective Chimp as well as Swamp Thing and Man-bat.
What to Expect From Abrams and Bad Robot Going Forward
This is hard to say since no new information about the development of the project is available, but there is a ton of potential source material with current and former members of Justice League Dark.
Hopefully, Abrams is able to find the right balance of good writing, funding, and a cast unlike previous owners of the franchise rights. Guillermo del Toro and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) had both passed on the project before it was taken up by Bad Robot.
Whatever the result, we will keep you posted.
