We weren’t too surprised way back in 2018 when Richard Donner stated that a 5th chapter in the cop action series wouldn’t likely ever happen. Afterall, the last installment in the franchise that starred Danny Glover and Mel Gibson was released before the turn of the millenium.

So, when Donner opened up the possibilities of Lethal Weapon 5 a few short months later, it got our taste buds going and our minds racing with questions. Will they bring back the original actors or do a reboot of it? Will the plot be more exciting than the Always Sunny routine (is that even possible?)?

Well now we have some confirmation from producer, Dan Lin, who says that the movie is going to be made and is on track. He shared his excitement about the project recently stating to the Hollywood Reporter,

“We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie and Dick Donner is coming back. The original cast is coming back and it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”

Lin has been involved in a bunch of recent projects including The Two Popes, Alladdin, and the Fox Television version of Lethal Weapon as an executive producer, but bringing the franchise back to the big screen is a much different project and he seems very excited about the prospect.

It’s certainly been a long time and if Murtaugh was “too old for this shit” back in the 20th century, Riggs and him are both definitely old-timers now. Both Glover and Gibson have expressed interest in doing the film for several years now so it will be interesting to see how they work the script for the aging stars.

Director, Richard Donner suggested a couple of years ago that the script would be much darker and was being worked on by Channing Gibson. The tentative title echoes this sentiment – Lethal Finale. It’s unclear if the original writer, Shane Black, will return to help polish up the script a bit.

No word yet on a possible date for filming to start, let alone a release date. However, Glover and Gibson have both been staying fairly busy in the last couple of years with many roles each. We will keep you posted on any developments.
