To many fans, Batman is more than just a superhero. He is an iconic image of what is best and worst in all of us, a complex never say die and resourceful protagonist working day and night for the betterment of mankind.
Perhaps this is a bit over the top, but the latest actor to morph into the caped crusader, Robert Pattinson, has sparked quite a bit of outrage in comic book geekdom when he stated that Batman wasn’t really a superhero because he has no “magical powers”.
The comment, which created a firestorm on social media, was made while Pattinson was doing an interview on Today to promote The Lighthouse last December. Many fans were taken aback by the comments and expressed their thoughts around the web.
Pattinson’s response came just recently with a half-hearted apology to say the least. Here is what the Twilight series actor jokingly had to say:
“I wasn’t educated about the subject. People got very angry about it. It’s bizarre. I still can’t understand the argument. Okay, he’s a superhero, I’m sorry! The next headline: ‘Pattinson retracts: Batman is, in fact, a superhero. He takes it back.’”
Many fans still didn’t see it as good enough and there are plenty of them out there. Batman films have come and gone over the decades to mixed reviews and much of the support or lack thereof from the fandom has been based on their opinion of the actor in the lead role. Pattinson is certainly not the first to catch the ire of fans, just ask Michael Keaton and George Clooney.
Pattinson is no stranger to the spotlight and passionate fans after his experience in the Twilight series and he has certainly asserted himself as an up and coming actor based on the plethora of great Indie flicks he’s done recently.
“Batman is such a cool hero because he does it all without superpowers. What’s more, the comics show that he has a plan to take down every member of the Justice League including Superman himself. So, clearly his lack of powers don’t hinder Bruce Wayne’s crime fighting career.”
However, the actor seemed to doubledown on his “superhero” comments recently when he again discussed the character on Time Out London saying, “Batman is such a cool hero because he does it all without superpowers. What’s more, the comics show that he has a plan to take down every member of the Justice League including Superman himself. So, clearly his lack of powers don’t hinder Bruce Wayne’s crime fighting career.”
Whatever he wanted to achieve with the statement, it didn’t go over well with many fans, which sparked even more debate. Despite his experience with a character loved dearly by many, it is safe to say that this crowd of loyal critics are not a bunch of gushing teenage girls. Nonetheless, bad press is better than no press and people are already discussing The Batman and it just began shooting.
The latest film about the Dark Knight is set to be released in June of 2021 and Director Matt Reeves has assembled an impressive cast to support Pattinson including Colin Farrell and Zoe Kravitz. Many reports suggest that the script is quite good and focuses on more than just the great gadgetry of the genius Bruce Wayne including his excellent detective prowess.
Hopefully, Pattinson will keep his comments on the rails over the next year and avoid a total meltdown of the loyal fanbase ala Brie Larson and Captain Marvel. The DCEU doesn’t need any similar drama.
