The latest movie starring Seth Rogan is Long Shot, a romantic comedy where he is playing Fred Flarsky whose unlikely pairing with Charlott Field played by Charlise Theron is the main focus on the plot. The story of the movie is quite interesting and full of quotable moments. However, amongst all of the dialogue and comedy bits, many people missed a very important anime reference.

Seth Rogan had to go on Twitter to congratulate a user who noticed that his character had a tattoo on the forearm. The tattoo was an image of the bike used by the protagonist of the iconic anime film Akira. The bike is one of the most memorable designs in the anime that managed to blow the minds of people all across the globe over three decades ago. It is also weird that we all missed this small detail since Long Shot is readily available on DVD and many streaming platforms meaning that we can just press pause and look for cool details. Usually, users love looking for interesting references and cool minutiae that make movies deeper and richer.

One of the reasons why is that Fred Flarsky never talks about this anime film while looking like a typical geek. What is really cool about this small detail is that such elegant strokes can definitely make a character deeper without forcing the audience to wait for revelations delivered through dialogue or flashbacks. You can just take a look at his forearm and say: “Oh, so he loves anime! That’s cool!”

Long Shot was a moderately successful film that was praised by critics and loved by audiences. The problem is that it didn’t make its budget back making over $53 million worldwide against a relatively big $40 million budget. It will likely make its money back on the ancillary market where most romcoms usually find their audiences.

On the other hand, we need to mention Akira again. The movie was released thirty years ago and it is one of the sci-fi classics that influenced many creators. There are rumors that Taika Waititi, a director known for his works on Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, expressed his desire to make a live-action version of Akira and even started talking about possible prospects with studio execs. When the rumors became an official announcement, Waititi had to choose a priority since Disney offered him to work on the next installment of the Thor franchise. Ultimately, Waititi chose to continue his journey in the superhero world.

Sadly, the referenced bike from Long Shot will unlikely become something that we will see on the big screen…
