The career of James Gunn is one of a guy who never really wanted to do anything unoriginal. The early works that made him famous included a collection of short videos featuring prominent porn stars in everyday situations that make a sudden twist in the end. He was always considered a very smart director who knows what he wants to achieve when working on a new project. His incredible flexibility and creativity proved to be useful when he started working for Marvel.

His entrance in the MCU was glorious. The Guardians of the Galaxy is a movie created around a group of not so super-powered individuals who resemble more a bunch of losers rather than a team of mighty superheroes. It was inconceivable for many to imagine that a blockbuster with such a weird group of characters including a mutant raccoon who is also a crazy scientist and a talking tree could make any money in the box office.

The MCU was a well-established brand by that time. People did not doubt the creative decisions made behind the closed doors of Marvel’s office. However, they also did not expect a super hit that The Guardians of the Galaxy proved to be. The film was amazing and immediately made James Gunn a darling for the MCU fans and critics alike. His next installment in the franchise was also praised highly although many considered it slightly weaker compared to the first, more tightly written movie.

During this time, Gunn also started helping Kevin Feige in writing the overarching story for the MCU. The whole cosmic phase of the MCU including the Infinity Saga was, allegedly, written by Feige, Russos, and Gunn. It was a moment of glory for the talented director.

When he was at the peak of his success, a series of tweets made by him earlier in his life was brought to attention by a small time journalist. The tweets contained controversial jokes that he made when he was younger. While he offered a formal apology, Gunn also stated that he was a younger person back when he made such jokes. The Twitter mob was furious and demanded Disney to remove him from the directorial position in the Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.

The cast of his movies stood behind him and even released a public letter in which they defended the director. Dave Bautista even announced that he would quit the MCU and boycott Disney if they fired James Gunn. The latter had to step down eventually. During all this time, Kevin Feige was silent. Many suspected that he wanted to rehire him later. Last year, it was confirmed. James Gunn was announced as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.

However, this decision was made after he had already signed with Warner Bros studio to direct the next installment in the Suicide Squad franchise. Warner Bros immediately offered him a job seeing as James Gunn is turning into the most efficient and creative director out there. It seemed that Gunn did not have any beef with Disney and Marvel as he immediately accepted the offer while still working on the Suicide Squad movie.

The DCEU had its moments but the Suicide Squad was definitely not one of them. While James Gunn was gathering accolades and fan love for his works on the MCU, Suicide Squad was torn apart by critics and fans for incoherent storytelling and weak character development. The ensemble movie did not come together as well as Warner Bros hoped.

James Gunn was a good choice for a director capable of righting the sinking ship and possibly taking it to a repair bay. Gunn’s work with the ensemble cast proved to be very efficient and interesting. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie managed to tell a very emotional and endearing story while introducing several characters and building a compelling cosmic environment.

It wasn’t a big surprise that despite the controversy he was offered the job immediately after announcing his stepping down as the MCU-related director. The DCEU delivered a big hit in Aquaman and managed to impress both critics and fans with Shazam! The Joker was also a billion-dollar hit. However, it was not a part of DCEU. The latest installment in the DCEU franchise was a flop. Birds of Prey did not fly high in the box office and managed to fail in terms of digital sales.

As uncertainty started mounting, James Gunn jumped in and promised to deliver a good Suicide Squad movie. We don’t have any reasons to doubt his capabilities. The man managed to make a movie based on a comic about a ragtag group of weirdos flying in a spaceship and doing random stuff for mostly money.

The confidence of James Gunn was oozing during his recent Twitter Q&A. When he was asked about the rating that will be attached to the movie, he firmly said that he knows it but cannot announce it. Hopefully, it will be an R-rating. The recent films like Joker and Logan proved that R-rated comic book movies can make big money in the box office and also leave a good impression. His wink-wink answer to the question suggests that the movie will not be rated PG-13.

James Gunn is currently sitting in self-isolation and has to entertain his fans via Twitter and Instagram. It is unclear when the team behind the cameras will be able to return to the studio to polish the movie. The production was mostly finished before the quarantine. However, some last touches that are usually done in the post production period are still required. It seems that Gunn is already thinking about what he will do with the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie as he hinted at the fact that there is basically nothing left to do with the Suicide Squad film.

As of right now, he is just teasing DC fans with what the next movie in the franchise will be. Many people are hyped for the Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn whose dark sense of humor and impeccable writing skills are well-known. We can only hope that Warner Bros studio will be bold enough to make the movie R-rated and insert a couple of really cool violent moments and dirty jokes. It will suit the team of criminals that fight evil against their will that much more!
