James Gunn has been very active on social media. The coronavirus outbreak forced many celebrities and artists to isolate in their mansions and release weird videos. However, James Gunn has been very productive with his time. He is working on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 and tries to entertain his fans teasing some information about the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

The cast of the movie features some of his darlings such as Nathan Filion and Michael Rooker. James Gunn considers them buddies. He also invited Taika Waititi to play one of the characters in the movie. The ensemble cast is definitely impressive and has names that many directors would kill to have on their sets. While new additions like Idris Elba, John Cena, and Filion are cool, there are returning members from the previous film. Margot Robbie will reprise her role of Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney is a fan favorite and will be playing Captain Boomerang once again, and Joel Kinnaman will be back as well as Viola Davis.

When James Gunn was asked during his Twitter Q&A session who has the most screen time, the director said that revealing this information would be a massive spoiler that will most certainly ruin the experience for some people. Now, many immediately jumped to the conclusion that the main focus of the film is the character of Harley Quinn who was considered by many the biggest advantage that the first Suicide Squad movie had.

Now, this may not be true since the latest installment in the franchise led by Harley flopped in the box office and did not impress with digital sales either. James Gunn once hinted that the anti-heroine will have a very exciting storyline in which she will experience a great journey. Nevertheless, he never specified to which degree her journey will be pivotal for the plotline and how long it will be. A journey to the hellish pit can be exciting yet short.

Chances are the main focus will be on Viola Davis’ character whose performance in the first movie also garnered a lot of praise. Pivoting the plot towards a conspiracy-related story with spying and intrigue can be a good idea. On the other hand, there are many other actors that James Gunn loves working with and he will be happy to give them more screen time.

Gunn is also known for elegantly subverting expectations of the audience. A story centered around the antics of Captain Boomerang can be a possibility. We also have to remember that Idris Elba and Nathan Filion reportedly have big roles in the movie. It is obvious that Taika Waititi won’t be able to do anything but a short cameo since he was very busy with his own movie Jo-Jo Rabbit during the filming of Suicide Squad.

John Cena and Nathan Filion were relatively free during this time and could have received a lot of screentime. Although, unlikely most screen time.

Taking everything of the above into consideration, it does look like Harley Quinn will play the most important role in the plot and receive a lot of screentime. Despite leading a box office bomb as Harley Quinn, her performance in the movie was very good and managed to garner praise from both moviegoers and critics. She may not be able to carry a solo film but she can definitely be the biggest star in an ensemble.

Another important factor is Gunn’s writing skills. He is known for creating compelling stories with interesting character arcs. The first Suicide Squad was heavily criticized for underdeveloped characters that did not mesh together well. James Gunn can easily fix this issue and give Harley Quinn something really meaningful to do in the movie.
