The latest trailer for the Bond movie was dropped with fanfare during the Super Bowl. It promised that the 007 agent will appear on the big screen again in the Spring of 2020. Well, a short tweet from the producers of the film shattered the hopes of Bond fans to see the film soon. The movie is delayed by 8 months. What was the reason to postpone it?
COVID-19 is one of the hottest topics that are circulating in the news cycle right now. People are afraid and many think that public gatherings should not be encouraged as the epidemic spreads across 6 continents. With over 500 infected in the US and thousands falling ill in Europe, the disease does not show any signs of stopping.
The fans expressed their fears and the studio also wants to make a smart move. Losing China and releasing the movie amidst a big epidemic rampaging in Europe will make the movie as big of a box office bomb as possible. However, it is a responsible move by James Page and David Leigh who said that they do not want to make the movie a financial disaster that also helps to spread the virus. In their letter, they expressed concerns that a single person without any symptoms but carrying a virus can spread the disease to thousands attending the premiere.
They decided to move the release date to November 12, 2020. The film will be released in the US on November 25, 2020, roughly two weeks after the European debut of the 007 agent.
There were more delays
The franchise is very big and has over two dozens movies if we count No Time to Die. There were films that were postponed before. However, this time, everything is different. The film had multiple rewrites of the script delivered by multiple different screenwriters who all tried to make a script that would satisfy the producers. Paul Haggis, Scott Burns, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge all were attached to the film at some point.
Directors were also switched a couple of times with the departure of Danny Boyle and the arrival of Cary Joji Fukunaga.
There are many people who are interested in the financial and critical success of the film. It will be the last time Daniel Craig plays the character. It is the 25th entry in the franchise. The latest iteration of the franchise started very strong with Casino Royale meaning that it needs to finish with a bang. However, the producers cannot delay it indefinitely! Hopefully, we will see the film soon.
