Netflix hit another home run this year with its fantasy sword and sorcery series The Witcher based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. Like many popular series past and present, this one was tough to binge watch because fans couldn’t wait for the next episode to release.

The popular show hasn’t been skimping on the budget either with detailed and well-conceptualized sets, great actors, and some nifty special effects thrown in. Clearly, Netflix has gone all in on the project having renewed it for a 2nd season already.

However, given the complex nature of the project, it may be a while before we get to revisit life on “The Continent” for the next season. So, what can fantasy geeks like us watch to keep us in our groove until Season 2 of The Witcher is released on Netflix?

Here are 5 shows that will help keep you occupied. Of course, you may have seen some or all of them, but rewatching them for the action and adventure may help satiate your appetite.

1. Carnival Row

The series on Amazon Prime stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne and is based on the screenplay A Killing on Carnival Row by Travis Beacham, who is also part of the show’s development.

The show is focused on a murder mystery set within a steampunk world filled with fantastic creatures, but also tormented by a variety of societal struggles including immigration. It’s a pleasant mix between the mystical, the noir, and the mysterious.

Carnival Row also just finished its first season, but has been picked up for a 2nd so if you get hooked (and you will, trust us) on it, you’ll have another favorite to look forward to later this year.

2. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Another Netflix contribution, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a prequel to the classic Jim Henson film The Dark Crystal from way back in 1982. For those of us old enough to have been “wowed” by Henson’s original masterpiece, the new 10-part series is equally amazing.

The series has already received rave reviews and a huge audience, but hasn’t been inked for a second season as of yet. Nonetheless, if you’re into fantasy, the Jim Henson Company has done the innovator justice with this one and given us fans some much desired additional storyline for the 40 year old marvel.

3. Vikings

One of the biggest hits ever for the History Channel, Vikings provides some of the best action adventure footage in any series in the last 10 years on television. If you haven’t been watching it already, it portrays the journeys of one of the great Norse heroes, Ragnar Lothbrok, his entourage, family, and equally legendary sons.

Loaded with sexiness and great acting talent, fans are treated to a rendition of the Viking exploits in Great Britain and other locales with a bit of mysticism and court intrigue. The series is finishing its 6th and final season currently, but a sequel series has already been signed by History and is in the works – Vikings: Valhalla.

4. The Mandalorian

Disney+ recaptured the hearts of Star Wars fans with the launch of the first live-action television series based on the epic franchise. After some serious disappointments with their box office offerings since taking the franchise rights from Lucas Arts, this adventure series is spot on.

The Mandalorian is set in the period of time after the end of Return of the Jedi and features some great actors including Pedro Pascal, Werner Herzog, and the lovable “Child” aka Baby Yoda. The first season created by Jon Favreau of Iron Man fame has 8 episodes and is slated to return later this year with the next season.

It’s likely that any true fantasy geek has already seen it, but just in case, you can catch it on Disney’s streaming network as a small fix while awaiting The Witcher’s return.

5. Game of Thrones

This is a no-brainer, but if you are truly jonesing for something to carry you over, you can’t go wrong with HBO’s adaptation of the George R.R. Martin books. You may want to stick to the first several seasons after the lackluster and uninspiring final season and a half, but the series gives us everything a Witcher fan desires. Action, intrigue and sexiness.

There are definitely others to consider to get you that needed fantasy/adventure fix until The Witcher returns and we are hopeful that the series will reach the same level of fan adoration as GoT, Vikings, and others, but only time will tell.

With any luck, we will be binging on The Witcher in the years to come while we wait for upcoming seasons.
